Der ?elektronische Brief“ bzw. die elektronische Mail (E-Mail) ist seit über 30 Jahren im privaten wie beruflichen Umfeld im Einsatz. Behörden, Steuerbüros, Krankenhäuser, Finanzinstitute und viele weitere Gruppen versenden und empfangen E-Mails, um Informationen auszutauschen. Innerhalb kurzer Zeit findet eine E-Mail ihren Weg vom Sender in Deutschland zum Empfänger in beispielsweise den USA. Wie funktioniert das? Und was hat es mit E-Mail-Verschlüsselung auf sich? Dieser Artikel betrachtet die grundlegende technische Funktionsweise der E-Mail sowie Hintergründe und Funktionsweise der Verschlüsselung mit S/MIME und PGP.     

Evaluation of Agronomic and Seed Characteristics in Elevated Oleic Acid Soybean Lines in the South-Eastern US

Increasing oleic acid, a monounsaturated fatty acid, is reported to strike the best balance between cold flow properties and oxidative stability in soybean seed oil to enhance biodiesel and produce a better burning fuel. In addition, it is important that elevated oleic acid soybeans have the agronomic traits of local cultivars and maintain oleic acid stability across environments. Research was conducted in 2007–2008 to evaluate six Roundup Ready^® soybean recombinant inbred lines exhibiting enhanced levels of oleic acid. The six elevated oleic lines averaged a 55% increase in oleic acid and a 43% decrease in linolenic acid over the two commercial cultivars (AG3906 and AG4103). Some elevated oleic acid genotypes fulfilled the linear regression definition of a stable genotype. TN03-93RR was the best genotype because of its oleic acid content (397 g kg^?1) and desirable regression estimates for stability. Iodine value (IV), peroxide value (PV), and induction period (IP) were used to evaluate the fuel properties of the two lines with the highest oleic acid content and the two commercial cultivars. The elevated oleic acid lines had significantly better IP, PV and IV for better biodiesel properties and oxidative stability than the two commercial cultivars.     

Ice‐Templated Scaffolds with Microridged Pores Direct DRG Neurite Growth

Successful spinal cord repair is thought to be promoted with hierarchically structured scaffolds. These should combine aligned porosity with additional linear features on the micrometer scale to guide axons across multiple length scales. Such scaffolds are generated through the carefully controlled directional solidification of an aqueous biopolymer solution, followed by lyophilization. Under specific freezing conditions this yields a highly regular and aligned lamellar architecture. This architecture exhibits uniform ridges of controlled height and width on the lamellar surface. These ridges run parallel to the pore axis, serving as secondary guidance features. The ridges are capable of linearly aligning 62.4% of chick dorsal root ganglia neurites to within ±10° of the ridge direction. Notably, neurites sprouting perpendicular to the ridge are guided into alignment with these microridged features.     

Virtual RF system platform dedicated to heterogeneous complex SoC design

In this paper, we propose to develop a hierarchical library associated with various simulators that can be used in a single platform, called TrustMe-ViP, which enables a unique simulation framework and full model interoperability. Such platform is dedicated to complex SoC design, such as trusted personal devices where cost and time-to-market are very important constraints. To validate this methodology, we present the estimation of BER and power consumption for a Bluetooth transceiver.     

Passive elastic mechanism to mimic fish-muscle action in anguilliform swimming

Swimmers in nature use body undulations to generate propulsive and manoeuvring forces. The anguilliform kinematics is driven by muscular actions all along the body, involving a complex temporal and spatial coordination of all the local actuations. Such swimming kinematics can be reproduced artificially, in a simpler way, by using the elasticity of the body passively. Here, we present experiments on self-propelled elastic swimmers at a free surface in the inertial regime. By addressing the fluid–structure interaction problem of anguilliform swimming, we show that our artificial swimmers are well described by coupling a beam theory with the potential flow model of Lighthill. In particular, we show that the propagative nature of the elastic wave producing the propulsive force is strongly dependent on the dissipation of energy along the body of the swimmer.

It is a disconcerting pleasure to meet old friends in unexpected settings. Mrs Cameron, whose name will be forever linked with Freshwater and Farringford on the Isle of Wight, spent her youth and early married life in India, returning home only in 1848. So it came about that she happened to be standing on the banks of the River Hooghly at Calcutta in the autumn of 1847, when the steamer carrying a young girl fresh from England let down its anchor. Miss Emily Metcalfe noted with maddening discretion in her journal.     

Impact of Brownian motion on the particle settling in molten metals

Understanding the settling behavior of nanoparticles in molten metals/alloys is important as it will aid in achieving uniform dispersions of reinforcement particles in metal matrix nanocomposites. Uniform dispersions are necessary to activate the Orowan strengthening mechanism, which can increase yield strength without significant diminishment of ductility. In this work, an analytical model of particle size effects on settling is described that takes into account both deterministic Stokes’ law and stochastic Brownian motion. The model shows a clear transitional behavior where settling velocity follows Stokes’ law for large particles and then drops to zero for small particles implying that Brownian motion predominates. It indicated that, in the Brownian motion regime, where the discrete nature of the liquid must be considered, the random motion imparted by unbalanced collisions can overwhelm the motions normally imposed by forces such as gravity, viscous drag, and thermal/concentration gradients.     

Poly(vinyl alcohol) functionalization with aldehydes in organic solvents: Shining properties of poly(vinyl acetals)

Poly(vinyl alcohol) has been functionalized with aldehydes in tetrahydrofuran (THF) with a good control of the grafting. A wide library of poly(vinyl acetals) could be obtained in order to study some structure/property correlations. The influence of the aldehyde nature on the functionalization rates has been studied, in particular for optical properties by measurement of the shininess for further applications in the cosmetic field. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
